WELCOME!
DECEMBER PROGRAM
CHRISTMAS TEA
The theme for our 2006 Christmas Tea is “Gingerbread Men” with red and green plaids as the color scheme. Everyone is heartily invited to don their favorite g-men attire and other holiday garb to join in fun, frolic, and fellowship! Please bring canapes, finger sandwiches, light salads, cookies, pastries, candies, cakes, and other holiday morsels! This is tea party. Save those hearty casseroles for the May feast. Each member should bring their own place setting with flatware. Bring a favorite tea cup and let’s toast the holiday season!!!
Anyone who can help with set-up on Friday, Dec. 8, at 3:30 P.M. at the church —please come!!! Tables need to be put-up and arranged. We need some muscle for that and since we do decorate at that time, we can use some decorating elves, too. Many hands make quick work. Thanks in advance to our great facilities people, hospitality committee members and guild members for helping. The Christmas committee is 3 people—we couldn’t do it without you!! Thanks again!
NOVEMBER 11, 2006
MEETING MINUTES
The regular meeting of the Chambersburg Quilt Guild was held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 11, 2006. There were 72 members and one guest present.
Meeting called to order at 1:00 pm by President Linda Schwalm; members and guests welcomed. New member Kathy Magaro and guest Wanda Hutchins were introduced.
Facilities Committee: Linda thanked Sue Hadley, Dagmar Unger and Katherine Grabowski, and Nikola Frafnetterova for having the room ready for meetings and activities. Also Linda reminded us that these ladies maintain the key for the church and all guild activities must be coordinated with the Facilities Committee.
Hospitality Committee: Linda thanked the committee, Debbie Brug, Donna Jones and this month’s volunteers Darlene Dixon and Grace Pace, for our refreshments.
Our Sunshine Greeters this month were Lee Hively and Pam Donaldson. Thanks Ladies! It is always nice to see a smiling face and receive a warm greeting when we come to the meeting.
Website: Linda thanked Amy Ensley and her family for the wonderful work on the website. A reminder to guild members that the web address is www.chambersburgquiltguild.org. We received two great compliments on the website at the retreat from ladies outside our guild.
Newsletter: Linda asked that anyone wishing to print their newsletter from the website may sign-up at the table in the back. Please remember that the deadline for submission is the 20th of each month to Phyllis Shipman.
Secretary’s Report: Minutes from the October meeting were approved upon a motion from Missy Molino and second by Debbie Brug.
Historian: Thanks again to Mary Barnhart and Laura Morningstar for taking on the job of guild Historians. Please remember to save any articles or photographs concerning the guild and submit them to these ladies. There will be a display of past scrapbooks at the December meeting for members to view. We are also in the process of moving the guild’s 2 storage cabinets to a location that is more accessible to various committees.
Membership: Reminder to all members to wear name badges to meetings and other guild events. Name badge kits and guild pins are available from Ruth Mollack.
2006-2007 Directories: Phyllis Shipman has finished the directory and they are available in the back of the room. Members are reminded to keep track of their directory – this is your life line to guild members and activities. If you are able to deliver directories to absent members, please talk to Phyllis.
Quilt Bee: The quilt bees are held the fourth Monday of each month from 9:30 am to 2 pm. This month’s bee is on November 27 at Linda Schwalm’s house. Attendees are asked to bring a bag lunch; Linda will provide a dessert and beverage. Anyone needing directions may contact Linda.
Retreat: We had another well attended and fun retreat November 3-5. Many thanks to Dottie Moreland for organizing it. A total of 71 ladies from Hagerstown, Waynesboro, and Chambersburg attended the event. The tentative date for the spring retreat is March 16-18, 2007.
Documentation: There is one more documentation days scheduled for November 18 from 8:30 – 2 pm. More volunteers are needed to help out at this ‘by appointment only’ documentation sessions. Please contact Dottie Moreland if you are able to help. If you have signed up and are not able to attend, please let Dottie know ASAP.
Christmas Tea: Megan Music, Darlene Dixon and Barb Taylor are planning a wonderful Christmas Tea for us at the December meeting. They would like to set up the room on Friday, December 8 at 3 pm and need volunteers to help. If you can help set up, please call one of the committee members.
Reminder to members: Please bring your own place setting (plate, flatware, cup) to the tea. Each member is also to bring light fare to share.
Mystery Batts: Reminder to members to pick up their parcels at the back table before leaving. Thank you Judie Svoboda for organizing this fun activity.
Library: The library will be available to the membership before the meeting and during the break. Thank you to Judie Svoboda and Fran Chamberlin for running a smooth operation.
Mystery Quilt: The second installment will be available today during the break. Please see Lani in the back of room or contact her if you were not at the meeting.
Guild Challenge: Chairman Debbie Brug and Nancy Bender presented the 2006-07 Guild Challenge. The theme is “Name that Tune”. Members can participate individually or as a duet, trio or quartet. The piece must be at least 24x24” square and depict the title of a song without actually showing the title. For further information, please contact Debbie Brug and she will gladly email or mail the guidelines.
Christmas Block: All outstanding blocks must be turned in at the December meeting. Please remember to sign your block with a pigma pen.
Swap Blocks: All swappers have been given their instructions. If you have any questions please call Nancy Bender. Members will swap blocks in March or April. A definite date will be posted in a future newsletter.
Quilt Show 2007: Lani made note that a Decorating Chairperson is still needed. Please contact Helen Lagasse if you are interested.
Sunshine: Lee Hively is our Sunshine Lady. Please contact Lee with the name of any member needing a hug and some sunshine.
Proposal for additional branch of Sunshine Committee: Peg Buck, Linda Schwalm, Helen Lagasse and Lee Hively met to establish sunshine quilt guidelines. They proposed: Any member who is on chemotherapy or diagnosed with a terminal illness will receive a quilt. Any member whose spouse, son, or daughter dies will receive a quilt. These quilts will be made with well coordinated fabrics – something special. We have selected two designs and kits will be prepared with complete directions. We will not be soliciting for donated fabric but small monetary donations for batting or fabric are accepted. The first 3 completed quilts were donated and fabric is being donated for the next 4 kits (2 cool tones and 2 warm tones). Interested members can contact Lee Hively to assemble the quilts. When a quilt is given to a member, another will be assembled to give when needed. Peg Buck has graciously offered to machine embroider labels with the guild logo and the words “Hugs, Comfort and Love from the members of the Chambersburg Quilt Guild”. A proposed memory book with a picture of the quilt and the name of the recipient will be kept in the library cart. The sunshine chairperson and one other guild member, perhaps a close friend, will personally deliver the quilt to the member.
Approval for this committee was given by the membership at the November meeting.
A quilt was presented to Wilma Wehrle at the November meeting. Wilma lost her beloved husband Gordon this past summer. Hugs and love to you Wilma.
Raffle Quilt Recipients: Due to additions and deletions to the list printed in the last newsletter, voting for the 2007 Raffle Quilt recipient has been postponed to the December meeting. The following organizations have been brought forth for consideration:
The members listed above will each write a 3-4 line paragraph on the proposed recipient for inclusion in the December newsletter. Anyone wishing to make further nominations is asked to contact Linda Schwalm and be prepared to write a short paragraph and send it to Phyllis ASAP.
Baby Quilts: Workshops have been scheduled on January 20 and February 17 from 10 am to 3 pm in the meeting room at Trinity Lutheran. Quite a few members have accepted Nancy’s challenge from September to make one baby quilt this year. Pre-cut quilt kits, bags of 6” squares, and quilt labels are available at the back of the room. Nancy Bender has tried to contact Pregnancy Ministries to present the quilts in December but no reply has been received.
Doll Quilts: Edie Lindsell and Becky Dopp have arranged for our doll quilts to be donated to the Marine Corps League “Toys for Tots”. This program collects new, unused toys for children each year from October to December 22. The Landis-McLeaf detachment of Chambersburg will collect our doll quilts and any other items this year. The local coordinator, J.R. Well, will enlist the help of local welfare agencies, churches, and other social programs for a list of children in our area. Former ‘active duty’ Marines distribute the toys before or on Christmas Day. Becky Dopp will be personally giving your donations to the local coordinator.
Chambersburg Reads: The Chambersburg Reads committee sent a note asking that appreciation be expressed to the Chambersburg Quilt Guild for their fantastic job and participation in many of their events. The events included the author’s brunch, display of many members’ quilts at the Coyle Free Library and Grove Family Library, Peg Armstrong’s presentations and the exhibit and sale of members’ quilts at the Council for the Arts.
Twenty of the 30 quilts exhibited at the Council for the Arts sold with members receiving 75% of the profit. We also sold tree ornaments that were left from the last quilt show boutique table that made $83.25 for the Guild. That sum, in addition to the $20.00 excess from the brunch, expanded the guild treasury by more than $100.00. Thanks, Mim.
Road Trip: The guild road trip held on October 28 was a great success. The group only made it to two of the three shops (Burkholder’s and Sauder’s) and then had lunch at the Silk City Diner. Thank you Sue Frederick for organizing the trip.
Programs: Sue Frederick read a thank you note received from Judy Gunter. Judy thoroughly enjoyed her visit and hopes that she did not scare anyone away from entering quilts for competition. Today’s program was presented by Dottie Moreland. Dottie gave us a peek at the Electric Quilt Software. Now we know how some of those incredible intricately designed quilts are made. Thank you Dottie.
After a brief show-n-tell, motion to adjourn the meeting was given by Fran Chamberlin; seconded by Lee Hively. Meeting adjourned at 3:25 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Nancy Bender

HUGS, LOVE, and COMFORT
Dear Quilting Friends,
It’s extremely important to me that you know how very much I cherish the beautiful quilt presented to me at the Nov. Guild meeting. I guess it was rather obvious how surprised and emotionally overwhelmed I was–and still am—by such a thoughtful gesture.
The “Hugs, Love, and Comfort” quilt is very appropriately named because that’s exactly what I feel each time I look at it!
The meaning behind the giving is one which I’ll cherish and keep in my heart as long as I live. I’ll do my best to help make quilts for others who need hugs, love, and comfort because I know first hand what the next recipient will experience.
Sincere thanks,
Wilma Wehrle
