WELCOME!

FEBRUARY PROGRAM

George Siciliano delivers his hilarious lecture and trunk show, “This guy must be nuts”.

George is a former US Marine who took up quilting in 1997 and quickly made miniature quilts his forte. He currently has more than 150 different design variations of the log cabin miniature and has accumulated more than 65 ribbons for his quilts in local, national and international shows.  He has been published in popular quilt magazine and in books published by the AQS and Rodale press. He and his wife Virginia of 41 years travel together. Virginia shares her quilt studio with George and as of this printing they are still talking!!!  Virginia also teaches hand quilting and “her stitches are a treat for the eye.”

For this trunk show George brings all of his quilts that he has made that are not away for a show. Each one has its own story and the quilt shows the evolution of his designs. As a special bonus, Virginia brings several of her quilts, one of which won third place in the 2001 AQS traditional pieced category at Paducah for her quilt ”Samarkand”. Virginia assists George in the presentation.

JANUARY MEETING MINUTES

The regular meeting of the Chambersburg Quilt Guild was held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 13, 2007.  There were 87 members and five guests present. Meeting called to order at 1:00 pm by President Linda Schwalm.

The program, Color Theory and Basic Design presented by Margaret Lutzke, was held prior to the business meeting.  Margaret presented us with a lot of great information and ideas on how to use color and design to their greatest advantage when we make our quilts.

The regular business meeting began at 2:08 pm. Linda thanked our Facilities Committee, Sue Hadley, Dagmar Unger, Kathryn Grabowski, and Nikola Graffneterova for setting up the room, our Sunshine Greeters Lee Hively and Donna Gilbert for a wonderful welcome, and our Hospitality Committee Debbie Brug, Megan Music, Donna Jones and volunteers Mary Lou Hendrickson and Joanie Purgason for the wonderful refreshments.

Secretary’s Report:  Minutes from the December meeting were approved upon a motion from Judie Svoboda and second by Lottie Masters

Treasurer’s Report:  Jan Hirneisen submitted a working balance of $6,300.48.  Report accepted on a motion from Grace Pace and second by Fran Chamberlin.

Quilt Bee:  The January, 2007 quilt bee will be held at Amy Ensley’s home on January 22nd.  Amy placed directions on the back table of the meeting room.  She also clarified that the directions distributed at the previous bee should have stated Exit 24 instead of Exit 29 on I-81.

Guild Cookbook: Cindy Bender and Cindy Kramer have volunteered to revive the Guild Cookbook project.  Please email them with your recipes.  We would like to have them printed and ready for sale at the July quilt show.

Mystery Quilt:  The fourth installment will be available today during the break.  Please see Lani or Mim in the back of room or contact them if you were not at the meeting.

Guild Challenge: The theme is “Name that Tune”.  Members can participate individually or as a duet, trio or quartet. The piece must be at least 24x24” square and depict the title of a song without actually showing the title.  For further information, please contact Debbie Brug and she will gladly email or mail the guidelines.

Spring Retreat:  The Sign-up sheet for the spring retreat is in the back of the room.  The date is March 16-18, 2007.  We will again share the building with the Buchanan Trail Quiltmakers and the Friendship Quilt Guild.  This year we will try a new meal schedule by serving supper on Friday night and a brunch on Sunday morning.  We will still have the three meals on Saturday as before.   If you have any questions, please contact Dottie Moreland.

Swap Blocks:  Bowtie blocks and Blue/White Stars are due at the February 10 meeting.  Please plan to stay after the meeting to swap blocks.  Pieced Tulips and Christmas Stars are due at the March 10 meeting.  Please plan to stay after the meeting to swap blocks.  If you have any questions, please call Nancy Bender.

Raffle Quilt 2008-2009:  The raffle quilt committee, Dottie Moreland, Darlene Dixon, Lottie Masters and Grace Pace, presented our new raffle quilt.  A name has not yet been chosen for this quilt but will be published at a later date.  The quilt pattern is made up of all pieced blocks.  Block kits may be obtained from the committee members.  Blocks are due back by the March meeting, April at the latest.  If you volunteer to make a block, please DO NOT square it up as is stated in the directions – the committee will take care of that.  Also, if you are making more than one, please DO NOT sew the blocks together.

Baby Quilts:  Workshops have been scheduled on January 20 and February 17 from 10 am to 3 pm in the meeting room at Trinity Lutheran. Please bring your machine, cutting matt, ruler(s) and rotary cutter(s).  Nancy will have one ironing board available but if a couple more could be brought that would be helpful.  A representative from Pregnancy Ministries will be at the February 10th meeting to receive the baby quilts.

Newsletter:  A reminder that all newsletter submissions are mailed, emailed, or phoned to Cindy Bender no later than the 20th of the month.  The newsletter should be posted on line around the 26th of each month.

Quilt Show 2007:  The committee will begin photographing quilts in February for entry in our July show.  Each quilt entered must be photographed and registered.  Only one quilt per registration form please.  No quilt will be hung if it is not properly photographed and registered.  On the registration form, it is necessary for you to document a value for your quilt for replacement purchases as per our insurance policy.

Road Trip to State Museum:  Phyllis Shipman has contacted the State Museum in Harrisburg about viewing a sampling of their quilt collection.  A sign up sheet for those interested was in the back of the room.  If you were not at the meeting but are interested in going, please contact Phyllis.  A date will be announced but will most likely be during the week sometime this spring.  The cost is $15.00 per person.  The trip will also include stops at Smile Spinners or Quiltmaker’s Cottage.

Documentation: Amy Ensley brought us some wonderful news.  We have received a $2,000 grant from NQA to help us with our documentation project.

Show and Tell was held upon completion of the business meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 3:00 pm upon a motion by Lani Brechbill and second by Sue Hadley.

Respectfully Submitted,

Nancy Bender, Recording Secretary

We will be presenting our baby quilt donation to a representative of Pregnancy Ministries at the February 10th meeting.  If you have a baby quilt finished and are in need of a label, please call Nancy Bender and she will mail you one.

BABY QUILT WORKSHOP

In order to get a jump start for the next year, there will be a baby quilt workshop on February 17 from 10-3 in our regular meeting room.  Please bring your machine, cutting mat, ruler and cutter and any fabric you wish to donate.  If you can bring an ironing board and iron it would be helpful.  Plan to make a quilt no smaller than 36-inches square.  A nice size is 45”x54” so that the baby can ‘grow into it’ and not out of it. Please contact Nancy Bender for any questions you may have.

BLOCK SWAP - SWAP DATES

Group I:

Bowties and Blue/White Stars

Date:  February 10, 2007

Group II:

Christmas Stars and Pieced Tulips

Date:  March 10, 2007

Swappers are asked to PLEASE stay after each meeting in order to swap the blocks.  If you cannot be at the meeting, please make arrangements to get your blocks to Nancy before the date they are needed. If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Bender at 423-6961 or email twins@pa.net.

SUNSHINE AND STAINED GLASS

There are still some openings for this workshop. Linda Poole will be teaching it prior to our regular guild meeting on March 10, 2007. The class will be from 9:00am to 12 noon. The workshop fee is $20.00. There is also a $15.00 kit fee payable at the workshop. Missy Molino, who knows a lot about these things, says the fee is worth the price. It includes the pattern, the bias tape and a glue stick. Linda will be teaching both hand and machine appliqué’ so you have a choice of techniques. There was a lot of interest in stained glass when we took our survey last spring. The February meeting will be your last time to sign up.

QUILT BUS

The Quilt Bus is coming in April for workshops and a lecture and shopping!
On Friday April 13th we will have an all day workshop "No Whining". It will run from 9:00am to 3:00pm. The workshop fee will be $20.00. This is a machine piecing workshop. It will focus on techniques, not a specific project. Most importantly, there will be no "Quilt Police". Just a lot of fun. The class will include basic blocks and various other blocks to add interest. We will be sewing blocks, cutting them up and sewing them back together. At the end you should have a bag full of inspiration blocks. Lunch will be every quilter for themselves.
On Saturday April 14th prior to our regular guild meeting we will have a half-day workshop "Stripper Club". It will run from 9:00am to 12 noon. The workshop fee is $15.00. This is also a machine piecing class focusing on technique rather than a specific project. You will be using strips of various lengths and widths to make a variety of blocks in different sizes. This is a great class to use up all those leftovers strips that are just lying around doing nothing. Deadline for signing up and paying for both workshops is the March meeting.

BOUTIQUE TABLE

OK ladies, the holidays are over. Now it's time to think about the boutique table for our show in July. We are looking for items to sell. Preferably hand made. We are going to use a "Christmas in July" theme so we are looking for items that are "gift worthy".  Some categories to consider-gifts for quilters (our target audience), kids, cooks, gardeners. You get the idea. Plus we could always use Christmas items-ornaments, stockings, etc.

Every month we will focus on a different category. If you have any ideas please bring them in the appropriate month. I will also try to have instructions available for some projects. February-gifts for quilters. Some ideas-charm squares (6 inch pieces of fabric), pin cushions, needle cases, project organizers, magazines, etc. Here is a link for a tool caddy for paper piecing  http://www.caroldoak.com/pdfs/ToolCaddyA.pdf  to get you started.

Remember, if we all make a few things we'll have a bountiful boutique table. Already have some finished? Bring them to our meetings along with the price you think we should charge and hand them off to Sue. Any questions? Call or email Sue Frederick

AQS BOOK ORDERS

AQS book orders will be taken every meeting. As long as there are six (6) items ordered, the order will be sent in by the Saturday after the guild meeting. By having 6 items, we get 30% off the list price. If there are not enough items ordered to get the 30% off, the order will be held until the next meeting. Contact Cindy Bender 717-353-3186.

FEBRUARY QUILT BEE

The February Quilt Bee will be February 26th, 2007 at the Home of Ruth Mollack from 9:30 to 2:00pm. Bring your lunch. Hostess provides dessert and a beverage.

CHAMBERSBURG QUILD GUILD 2006-07 CHALLENGE

The challenge for this year should be a lot of fun for both beginner and proficient quilter as well. The name of our project is “Name That Tune” and centers around designing a quilt depicting the name of a familiar song. The guidelines are printed in full in the January 2007 newsletter. If you have questions, please call Debbie Brug, Nancy Bender, or Sue Hadley. Have fun with your creation!

GUILD COOKBOOK

Thanks to those guild members who have submitted recipes. There has been a trickle of submissions, for that we are grateful; however a steadier stream would be appreciated. Cindy Kramer and Cindy Bender will continue to collect guild member recipes for a guild cook book.  We know that you do cook (at least sometimes). The goal is to have the cookbook printed and available for fundraising in July 2007.  Just in time for the guild quilt show! You may hand your recipes to one of these quilters at a meeting, send by email (kwiltn@comcast.netbendercj@innernet.net ), or snail mail (addresses in the membership directory. Watch the newsletter each month for updates and deadlines.

A THANK YOU

I want to extend a big Thank You to all for my Hugs, Comfort and Love Quilt!  It was quite a surprise when Lee Hively and Mim Huffman came to my door the other day to deliver the quilt.  The quilt is beautiful (the perfect colors for my living room) and I will treasure it always.  This is a special project and a very special gift for those of us needing a little TLC in our lives at this time.

Fondly, Jan Bashor
