MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES
October 14, 2006
The regular meeting of the Chambersburg Quilt Guild was held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 14, 2006. There were 77 members and one guest present.
Meeting called to order at 1:00 pm by President Linda Schwalm; members and guests welcomed.
Facilities Committee: Linda thanked Sue Hadley, Dagmar Unger and Katherine Grabowski for having the room ready for meetings and activities. Also Linda reminded us that these ladies maintain the key for the church and all guild activities must be coordinated with the Facilities Committee.
Hospitality Committee Linda thanked the committee, Debbie Brug, Donna Jones and this month’s volunteers Mim Huffman and Donna Widney, for our refreshments.
Our Sunshine Greeters this month were Lee Hively and Barb Taylor. Thanks Ladies! It is always nice to see a smiling face and receive a warm greeting when we come to the meeting.
Website: Linda thanked Amy Ensley and her family for the wonderful work on the website. A reminder to guild members that the web address is www.chambersburgquiltguild.org
Newsletter: Linda asked that anyone wishing to print their newsletter from the website may sign-up at the table in the back.
Secretary’s Report: Corrections were made to the September minutes regarding the misspelling of Annamarie Schwartz’s name and information on Chambersburg reads. No additional corrections or additions were noted. Corrected version will be emailed to Amy for upload to the website. Motion to accept minutes and corrections was made by Peg Buck; seconded by Debbie Brug; minutes and corrections approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Jan Hirneisen was not able to attend. Treasurer’s Report was given by Nancy Bender. We have a working balance of $6,739.25. Jan also sent information regarding the raffle quilt monies to date: Total money received to date is $3,256.00; expenses totaling $638.14; profit to date of $2,617.86 to be split equally between the guild and the documentation project. Updates on any further monies received will be noted in the future.
Historian: after making an appeal for a Historian at the September meeting, two volunteers stepped forward; Mary Barnhart and her daughter Laura Morningstar. These ladies have asked that anyone who sees guild related information in the newspapers to please cut it out and save it as they do not subscribe to local newspapers. All articles and photos are appreciated. These ladies will maintain the guild scrapbook.
Membership: Ruth Mollack is in Colorado visiting her new grandson; Grace Pace has stepped in to man the registration table this month¼¼¼ thank you Grace! Reminder to all members to wear your name badges to meetings and other guild activities. Badge kits and guild pins are available from Ruth.
AQS book orders: Cindy Bender is coordinating the order of books from AQS for the guild. Due to Cindy’s absence today, Lani has the yellow folder with order forms. Members can save up to 30% per book when six books are ordered.
Embroidered Shirts: Shirts are available through Peg Buck. Long sleeve denim button down shirts, navy blue sweatshirts and short sleeve polo shirts are available. Order forms are on the membership table in the back of the room.
2006-2007 Directories: Phyllis Shipman has finished the directory and it is available in the back of the room. Members are reminded to keep track of their directory – this is your life line to guild members and activities. If you are able to deliver directories to absent members, please talk to Phyllis.
Quilt Bee: The quilt bees are held the fourth Monday of each month from 9:30 am to 2 pm. This month’s bee is on October 23 at Missy Molino’s house. Attendees are asked to bring a bag lunch; Missy will provide a dessert and beverage. Anyone needing directions may contact Missy.
Retreat: Dottie Moreland was unable to attend today’s meeting; monies for retreat are being collected by Mim Huffman. The retreat is November 3-5 at the Byer’s Conference Center in Roxbury. Anyone signing up today will be put on a waiting list. For more information, please contact Dottie Moreland.
Documentation: There are two more documentation days scheduled, October 21 and November 18 from 8:30 – 2 pm. More volunteers are needed to help out at these ‘by appointment only’ documentation sessions. Please contact Dottie Moreland if you are able to help.
Sunshine: Lee Hively is our Sunshine Lady. Please contact Lee with the name of any member needing a hug and some sunshine.
Linda made a proposal for an additional 'branch' of the Sunshine Committee. She has asked for input regarding the making of lap quilts for members who are experiencing a loss of a spouse or child or terminal illness. Fabrics would be donated and quilts made by members of the guild. General comments were made regarding the proposal. Linda Schwalm, Helen Lagasse, Lee Hively and Peg Buck will form a committee to work up guidelines for this committee and bring them back to the guild for further discussion.
Raffle Quilt Recipients: Linda asked for nominations for recipients for next year’s raffle quilt monies. The following nominations were received:
Documentation: Lani Brechbill
Women in Need: Karen Manderson
Ronald McDonald House: Jean Koch
Hugs and Kisses Quilts: Fran Chamberlin
Bernice Somers brought up a concern as to whether or not the monies should stay in the local area.
Linda will contact Missy Molino regarding Hugs and Kisses quilts and see if she wants to have a monetary donation made as many of the vendors at Quilt Odyssey are very generous with donations. The members listed above will each write a 3-4 line paragraph on the proposed recipient for inclusion in the November newsletter and send it to Phyllis Shipman for publication in the newsletter. Anyone wishing to make further nominations is asked to write a short paragraph and send it to Phyllis ASAP. Voting will take place at the November meeting.
Library: Judie Svoboda and Fran Chamberlin said that the book cases for the new cart are in; however building is on hold until Charles Moreland is feeling better. Library is available before the meeting and during the break.
Mystery Batts: Judie Svoboda reminded members to turn in their batt information sheets. She will distribute names ASAP so that participants can bring in the nine FQs at the November meeting.
Mystery Quilts: Mim Huffman and Lani Brechbill will issue the first installment of this project at the break today.
Baby Quilts: Workshops have been scheduled on January 20 and February 17 from 10 am to 3 pm in the meeting room at Trinity Lutheran. Quite a few members have accepted Nancy’s challenge from September to make one baby quilt this year. Edie Lindsell has made and turned in nine quilts so far!!!. Keep up the good work ladies!!!!
Swap Blocks: Nancy Bender has the instructions for those participating and they will be available during the break. Anyone with questions may contact Nancy.
Christmas Block: Blocks are already coming in. Anyone who did not receive a kit may contact Nancy Bender for fabric and instructions. Blocks are due back at the November meeting or at the latest at the December meeting.
Quilt Show 2007: The show is scheduled for July 20-21 and the theme is “Quilt Traditions Old and New”. Helen Lagasse asked for members to please consider signing up to help on a committee; sign-up sheets are in the back of the room. She asked for a volunteer to chair the Registration and Decoration committees.
The committee is considering having quilts judged this year at the show. Any comments regarding this may be directed to Helen Lagasse, Carole Rice or Lani Brechbill.
Program Committee: This year’s upcoming programs are listed in the directory. The shopping road trip to Lancaster will be October 28. Those going are asked to meet at JC Penney’s at the Chambersburg Mall no later than 9:00 am.
Chambersburg Reads: There will be a Quilt Talk given by Peg Armstrong on ‘The Craft and History of Sewing” with a display of antique sewing implements and toys on Friday October 20 at 1 pm at the Coyle Library.
Mim Huffman noted that the brunch of September 28th was well attended. There were 65 people served; approximately 38 of that number were guild members. The event came out $60 to the good. Dr. Raymond Dobard, co-author of Hidden in Plain View, was in attendance and was a very personable man. He was even ready to buy tickets for next year’s raffle quilt and it isn’t even finished!!!!
Mim stated that approximately half of the quilts that members placed for sale at the Council For the Arts have been sold. There are many quilts still on display at the Council in addition to the Grove Family and Coyle Libraries.
The Chambersburg Reads event will conclude on October 24.
Fulton County Quilt Show: The Fulton County Quilt Club, Rene Parson President, will be holding their show at the Fulton County Fairgrounds in McConnellsburg on October 20-22.
Today’s Program: After show and tell and a short break for refreshments, Sue Frederick introduced Judy Gunter, a National Quilt Association certified judge who spoke on “What Judges See”.
Motion to adjourn meeting was given by Lani Brechbill; seconded by Peg Buck. Meeting adjourned at 3:00 pm.
