WELCOME!
OCTOBER PROGRAM FEATURE
by
JUDI GUNTER
Join us in October to meet Judi Gunter of Severna Park, Md. Judi is a NQA certified judge. She
has had her quilts exhibited in Houston and Paducah. She also has a local connection—she
juries the quilts for Quilt Odyssey.
Judi will be presenting her lecture “What Judges See.” This is a lecture about the standards and
practices used to judge quilt shows. If you are interested in entering quilt shows, this is
invaluable information. Or it may help you answer a question we’ve all had about quilt
judges—“What were they thinking?” Can’t wait–check out Judi’s website at
www.quiltjudge.com.
P.S. There will be a $5.00 fee charge for guests.
MINUTES
OF THE SEPTEMBER MEETING
The regular meeting
of the Chambersburg Quilt Guild was held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday,
September 9, 2006. There were 98 members present.
- Meeting called
to order by President Linda Schwalm, members welcomed back and new members
and guests were introduced.
- Linda noted that
the Social Gathering time will be from noon to 1:00 P.M. to give people the
chance to mingle. She also thanked facilities committee for setting up the
room and noted that they would need help afterward to put the room back together.
Linda also noted the important contribution of the Hospitality and Sunshine
committees and noted that Lee Hively, Sunshine Chairperson would rather have
many calls about one member than none at all.
- Linda made of
the wonderful job that Amy Ensley and her husband and son have done with the
website. Members were asked to think about printing their newsletter off from
the website to help cut costs and therefore having more funds available to
bring in speakers or workshops. Sign up sheet is in the back of the room.
- Linda made a
public apology to Carole Smith for omitting her name from the publications
and website information for Publicity. This will be corrected in future publications.
- Regarding
membership–Linda reminded members that dues must be paid today
for inclusion in the directory. She also made note of the upcoming Quilt Bee
on September 25 at Dottie Moreland’s house.
- Secretary’s
Report: there were omissions in the version printed on the website;
Barb Taylor handed in the corrected version for the archives; Nancy Bender
will put it in the notebook. Motion given to approve by Barb Taylor, Seconded
by Helen Lagasse.
- Treasurer’s
Report:
Jan Hirneisen gave the treasurer’s report. Embroidered Shirts: See Peg
Buck for orders. Peg noted that the golf shirts are only available in men’s
sizes so order a size smaller.
- Retreat:
Dottie presented information on the upcoming retreat at Byer’s Conference
Center in Roxbury Nov 3-5; we will be sharing the newly expanded building
with the Buchanan Trail Quilt Guild from Waynesboro and the Friendship Quilt
Guild from Hagerstown, Md. Friday night covered dish is possible; Nancy Bender
suggested everyone pitch in for a meat/cheese platter to avoid having a lot
of leftovers to deal with. Cost of retreat can be found in the September newsletter
or by calling Dottie Moreland.
- Celebration
Day at Luther Ridge: Dottie Moreland presented information on this
event: September 30 from 7:30 A.M. (Set-up) to approximately 2:00 P.M. Need
people to sit and demo. Also need a few quilts for display.
- Documentation:
Dottie stated we have documented close to 800 quilts and more coming in. Two
more documentation days are being scheduled this fall. See Dottie to sign
up to help.
- Sunshine:
Lee Hively is ill today; she asks that when you find a member is in need of
sunshine, please call her.
- Library:
Fran Chamberlin and Judie Svoboda; Library cart will be in the hallway to
relieve congestion at the door and it is getting too heavy to roll very far.
Library will be open ½ hour before the meeting, and ½ hour after
the meeting—also during break. They are reworking the cataloging system.
Second cart is coming soon. If you made donations and have not received a
thank you, please let them know. Also, reminder of fine of $1 per book per
month.
- Mystery
Batt: Judie Svoboda has forms to fill out; due by October 14. Will
start in November bringing in 9 FQs. Use quality fabrics; perhaps something
a little extra for birthday month. A table will be set up right by the door
for people to put their packages on to avoid accidental identification of
secret batt.
- Chambersburg
Reads: Mim Huffman; wall hangings are on display at the Council of
the Arts on Main Street, just pass the Capital Theater. Jennifer Chiaverinni
cancelled and the presentation at the brunch is now going to be the co-author
of the book “Hidden in Plain View” which is about the Underground
Railroad. Luncheon is from 10:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. and Mim said that they
need people to help serve, etc. The guild has 8 of their allotted 50 spaces
left.
- Mystery
Quilt: Mim Huffman described the mystery quilt; cost is $5.00. Each
person will received a set of instructions each month; starting in October.
It will be a 40x40 wall hanging and have stars in the middle. Projects will
be revealed in May.
- Baby
Quilts: Nancy Bender said workshops will be scheduled and members
notified in the newsletter. She challenged each member to make at least one
baby quilt. Quilts we have will be given to Pregnancy Ministries in December.
- Christmas
Block Exchange: Nancy Bender, Judie Svoboda, Fran Chamberlain and
Carole Smith present the block and instructions. Blocks will be due back November
11 or no later than the December meeting.
- Swap
Blocks: Nancy Bender presented the four choices for the block swap.
Directions and yardage calculations will be given out at the October meeting.
- 2007
Quilt Show: Helen Lagasse and Carol Rice presented information. Show
dates are July 20-21 at Falling Spring Church. Show title is “Quilt
Traditions Old & New.” This year there will be demos. We need a
chair for the frames set up/take down committee. Carol reminded us that every
member is needed to help the show succeed.
- Programs:
Sue Frederick, Missy Molino and Helen Lagasse presented the schedule for programs.
Sue also reminded members that there is a $5.00 charge for guests who attend
a lecture/program and this will be strictly enforced from now on. Also, checks
for workshops will be held until after the workshop. Refunds will only be
given if the workshop is cancelled. Sue went over the program schedule for
the year.
- After the break;
program committee held a drawing for door prizes of Quilt Odyssey merchandise
and a sewing basket donated by Sew’n Place. Jan Hirneisen and Nancy
Heishman won the Odyssey merchandise; new member Jane Eiker won the sewing
basket.
- Show
and Tell: Members share the beautiful creations. Sue Frederick made
note of Missy Molino’s new charity “Hugs & Kisses Quilts”
that was created to replace ABC quilts at Quilt Odyssey. They donated 50 quilts
to Hershey Medical Center this year.
- Raffle
Quilt: winner was Esther Gift; ticket sold the previous day by Anna
Marie Swartz.
- Ruth Mollack
made an appeal for someone to work the membership table at October meeting;
Grace Pace volunteered.
Ruth Mollack made
the motion to adjourn the meeting; second by Peg Buck. Meeting adjourned at
3:25 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Bender

WEB PAGE
Anyone who has had trouble printing the newsletter from the website may not have Adobe
Acrobat Reader on their computer. This is required to print out the newsletter. There is now a
link right on the website to download this free software if you need it. You only need to do this
once, then after that you will have no problem. Also, for anyone having trouble getting to the
website at all, all we can say is make sure you are ending with .org NOT .com, and type
chambersburgquiltguild VERY CAREFULLY. All of the q’s, and g’s, and u’s, and i’s make it
difficult to notice typos. Once you have it though, just bookmark and never have to worry about
it again!!! Please call our web coordinator, Amy Ensley at 530-9550 if you have any questions.
We are very glad that many ladies signed up to receive the Bee Line from our web page. Many,
many thanks!!!! This will save on expenses for the guild. There will be a sign-up sheet
available at the meeting for others to use.

RETREAT
We had such a great response for the Fall Retreat. At this time with 2 people/each double
room and 1 person/each single room, there are 6 people without a bed.
Would any of the members who signed up for the retreat be willing to have an extra person on
a roll-away bed share their room? Each person would have their own bed.
If
you can do this there would be 3 people in a double room==2 regular beds plus
1 roll-away bed. The single room would have 2 people==1 regular bed plus 1 roll-away
bed.
If you are willing to do this, please contact Dottie Moreland at 263-1476. If you can not do
this, I’ll understand.
DOCUMENTATION
We will be doing Quilt Documentation on two Saturdays in October, the 7th & the 21st. Also
on November 18th. We still have a list of people with more than 5 quilts or who missed the
regular Documentation Days that we will be scheduling by appointment to bring in their quilts
these days.
The Documentation will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church ( this is where our regular
meetings are held ) from 8:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. If you can help on any of these days, please
call Dottie Moreland at 263-1476.
